People Living Confidently-Joe Lawson

At Shoot Point Blank, we are proud of the community we’ve built—a community of people with different backgrounds and lifestyles who nevertheless share a common interest in firearms and in Living Confidently. What does Living Confidently mean? Every member of the community has his or her own unique definition and their own unique story. That definition may include traditions of family and service, personal independence, the love of an exciting sport, and much more, in a wide range of exciting combinations. In this feature, we share the stories of our associates. We hope you’ll accept our invitation to join the community and create your own story of Living Confidently!
This is Joe Lawson from our Indy North location and this is his story of Living Confidently One of eight children, I was born and raised in Indianapolis, where I attended Roncalli High School and was a member of the school’s first state championship football team. In 1995, I joined the Marion County Sheriff’s Department in the jail and lock-up division. I was chosen to attend the department’s elite CERT School (Corrections Emergency Response Team). The school was run by SWAT and responsible for increased jail security, riot control, hostage situations, and high-risk transports. I was also a member of the jail division Gang Intelligence Unit.
I was chosen as part of the staff for two seasons of the Discovery Channel’s Eco-Challenge Adventure Race, which took me to Morocco and Argentina. I worked directly for Mark Burnett, the creator of the CBS show Survivor. It was then that I decided to leave the Sheriff’s department and pursue my passion for mountain climbing.
When I was 16 years old my father committed suicide after years of battling depression. After seeing other friends and relatives struggle with the illness, I decided to take action. At the age of 35 I set out to climb the “Seven Summits – The Highest Mountain on Each Continent” I secured corporate sponsorship and began a five-year journey across all seven continents. Only Everest remains on my list of mountains to conquer.
I am an avid hunter of deer and turkey. My lovely wife, Raena, and I have two awesome dogs: A full blooded chocolate lab named Sheldon, and a Shepard/Husky mix named Niko. We enjoy the great outdoors, hiking, dock-diving events, and spending time with family and friends. I also believe in the importance of physical fitness and train regularly in CrossFit and the Krav Maga martial arts.
My current passion is competition shooting. I compete in IDPA, USPSA and Steel Challenge Matches. My current favorite competition firearm is the Walther Q5 Match. I generally clean with CLP after each time I shoot, especially after a competition. I generally carry a Glock 17 or the Smith & Wesson Shield. I am a certified NRA pistol instructor, a Certified Insight Firearms Instructor, a Sig Sauer Armorer, and a Smith & Wesson Armorer. I truly enjoy passing along my training and experience to customers and first-time firearm owners at Shoot Point Blank.
